If you’re entirely new to the concept of Google Ads but want to know if they could be an excellent way to reach more potential customers for your business, we’re here to help. We’ll teach you what Google Ads are, how they work and whether they suit your business.
What are Google Ads?
Google Ads is a paid advertising service provided by Google. This type of advert is known as pay-per-click (PPC), where a business (the advertiser) pays Google per click or impression on an advert. As a result, the advertiser only pays when a person clicks on their advert. If you set up the ad correctly, those clicking the ads will likely be genuinely interested in the product or service.
Google Ads is a fantastic way to target people searching for services or products that you offer, as people can find your business more efficiently. With Google Ads, you can increase website traffic and get more phone calls and visits to your physical location, which should translate into more customers.
How do Google Ads work?
Google Ads allows the advertiser to create adverts for mobile and desktop devices and target these to a specific audience. Your business will then appear on the search engine results page (SERP) when someone does a Google search using your keywords.
Google’s pay-per-click model allows businesses to target specific keywords and make a bid on that keyword, so companies compete with others targeting the same keywords. Choosing keywords (and negative keywords) is essential to the ad creation process to ensure you do not have unwanted clicks on your ads. For example, if you are a photographer selling photography services only, you should set up your ads to avoid clicks from people looking to buy photographer equipment whilst encouraging clicks from people looking for a wedding photographer.
Businesses can choose from three different options for their bids:
- Cost-per-click (CPC) is how much you pay when someone clicks on the ad
- Cost-per-mille (CPM) is how much you pay per 1000 ad impressions
- Cost-per-engagement (CPE) is how much you pay when a Google user completes something specific on your ad, such as signing up to your mailing list, watching a video, downloading a PDF etc.
Google Ads has several campaign types, including search, display, shopping, video, and app. You can use each ad type differently depending on your marketing goals.
Would Google Ads benefit my business?
The answer to this is almost always a resounding yes! That’s because Google is the most popular website in the world, with around 4.3 billion people using Google daily. Each time someone uses Google to search for products or services like yours is an opportunity to get in front of your ideal client. You could miss out on hundreds, if not thousands, of potential new customers if you’re not utilising Google Ads.
